Why I read it: 2024 Reading Challenge
More Than Words is an excellent book and I will absolutely be reading it again. HOWEVER, for reasons explained shortly, not everyone may agree with this glowing assessment.
The novel follows the story of a woman in her early 30s who has always lived under the expectations of her father. She is destined to inherit the family business, and has spent every moment of her life in the spotlight, preparing for this role. To get away, she volunteers as a staffer on a campaign for New York City Mayor. As events in her personal life unfold, she realizes that not everything (and everyone) is what she originally believed, and she has to reckon with who she thought she was, and who she is truly meant to become.
Every page of this book I found either something to relate to or a quote that resonated. Perhaps it’s where I am in life (I am also in my early 30s) and my journey of abandoning expectations, but something about this book really connected with me. There were times that I cried real tears while reading this book and others where I felt the tension of new love radiating off of the page.
That being said, this book was very, very predictable. From the synopsis, I had a sense of what was going to happen, and honestly, I got exactly what I wanted out of it. My only qualm comes at the end of the book when it feels incredibly rushed. It didn’t bother me enough to knock it down a star or even a half star, but I did roll my eyes at it.
If you read this one and have any additional thoughts, let me know in the comments!
TL;DR: Would I recommend it to a friend? YES YES YES. Very light and quick read that definitely makes you feel a wide array of emotions. It isn’t deep though, so if that’s what you’re going for, you may not enjoy it.
